Lamlash Bay No Take Zone paves the way for revival of UK seabeds

The north part of Lamlash Bay off the Isle of Arran is home to Scotland’s first fully-protected marine reserve. Created in 2008, a pioneering No Take Zone was the result of years of campaigning by locals who wanted to see better protection for their marine areas. The group, COAST, were concerned about the impact of over-fishing and damage to the seabed caused by bottom-towed fishing gear. A team of researchers from the University of York, led by Dr Bryce Stewart (Department of Environment and Geography), have, for the last decade, been tracking the recovery of marine life in the No Take Zone and wider Marine Protected Area. Their findings are acting as a blueprint to support similar areas and other coastal communities around Scotland and further afield, and underline the case for increased marine protection.
