YUGOSLAVIA: PEC: KOSOVO: SERB HOUSES SET ALIGHT

(25 Jun 1999) Albanian/Nat Despite the presence of K-FOR, houses continue to be set alight in Kosovo as returning ethnic Albanians take revenge on the Serb population. The return of some of the refugees also continues to lead them to awful revelations. One family in Pec returned to their ruined house to find the body of a close relative in the rubble. While the town's Italian K-FOR troops detained at least one member of the K-L-A on Friday, they were unable to stop the burning and looting of Serb homes in the town. Houses are burning again in the town of Pec in western Kosovo. But these buildings belong to Serbs rather than ethnic Albanians. Many Serbs, who are suspicious of K-FOR and fear for their safety as Kosovo Albanians return, are leaving the town. Elsewhere the town's refugees continue to return to confront terrible scenes. This family came back to the town after spending the conflict in Albania. One elderly relative was too sick to make the trip and stayed behind. When his relatives returned, they found his body among the rubble of their house. SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "We left for Albania because there were shelling in the area and my brother had to stay. When we returned, we found his body." SUPER CAPTION: Frame brother K-FOR is trying to stop the violence in Pec by ridding the streets of weapons. Under the terms of the Kosovo Liberation Army's (KLA) demilitarization agreement, its men are not allowed to carry arms in public. Italian K-FOR troops arrested an armed K-L-A on Friday. He man was brandishing a gun and grenade in the street. The arrest comes at a time of high tension between returning ethnic Albanians and the remaining ethnic Serbs in Pec. The city is an important centre of the Serbian Orthodox church, but it is now almost empty of Serbs. And as the Serbs leave, ethnic Albanians have begun looting their abandoned houses. In the streets, men driving carts and trailers loaded with goods taken from Serb-owned houses made off with what they had stolen. The K-L-A seemed to be doing nothing to stop the looting, although K-FOR commanders say they will crack down on the practice if they came across it.
