KOSOVO: PEC: SERB HOUSES CONTINUE TO BE BURNED & LOOTED

(24 Jun 1999) Italian/Serbo-Croat Retribution reached a new level on Thursday in the Kosovar city of Pec as dozens of homes and businesses were burned to the ground. Local Albanians have looted Serb homes setting them on fire after emptying them of their contents. Italian K-FOR troops are in Pec, protecting the Serb community and disarming the K-L-A. But the city's shrinking and embattled Serb community is now isolated and located in pockets throughout the town. Despite protection from K-FOR, signs of a Serb exodus are starting to appear. Tensions are growing in Kosovo as thousands of ethnic Albanians return to their homeland to find their homes burnt to the ground and their possessions looted. Some ethnic Albanians are seeking revenge against the local Serb population. Along with the assistance of the K-L-A, they are burning and looting. Serb houses in the city of Pec where set alight on Thursday and ethnic Albanians scrambled to take possessions belonging to the many Serbs who have been forced to flee. SOUNDBITE: (Serb-Croat) "The KLA came to my house yesterday and gave us just ten minutes to leave. They said we had to get out of here." But many ethnic Albanians, distraught at finding their homes destroyed, are taking matters into their own hands. These Serb houses have been set alight. SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "This house burning behind me belongs to a Serb collaborator." SUPERCAPTION: Local Albanian man UPSOUND: (Albanian) "Look at these houses" SUPERCAPTION: Albanian Woman The local Serb community is becoming increasingly fearful of returning K-L-A soldiers and other displaced members of the Albanian community. As part of NATO's peacekeeping force, Italian K-FOR soldiers are patrolling the city searching people for weapons, carrying out de-mining and generally trying to keep the peace. SOUNDBITE: (Italian) "We have done and we continue to do everything we can to secure everybody's safety." The monks at the monastery are under K-FOR protection and are providing refuge for those afraid of vengeful K-L-A soldiers.
