Rare footage of mysterious church where family member broke into the crypt in search of lost fortune

St Mary’s Church sits nearby to Narford Hall which was built in the 18th century. There is no vehicle access to this isolated and seldom visited church. The only access is by foot along a grass track lined with hedgerow. The church is set on private land and for many decades visits from the general public were actively discouraged as the church became a private mausoleum for the Fountaine family who have owned the Narford Estate since the early 18th century. Some fragments of St Mary’s date all the way back to the 12th century when there was a substantial population here before gradually decreasing over time. By 1851 there were only 100 inhabitants and there are no more than 20 today. What makes this church even more fascinating is that, since the mid-20th century, very few people have been allowed in to see it. By law, there has to be reasonable access to a parish church even if it is not directly accessible by normal means. However, this is slightly complicated at Narford because the church was declared redundant. A rare visitor granted permission to see the church was Munro Cautley in the 1930s who reported back that St Mary had fallen into a very damp and neglected state. Another gentleman (John Harris) was granted access some 30 years later but photography was strictly prohibited inside the church. Inside there was a large hole in the wall which leads down into the crypt. Local folklore says a member of the family who had been wronged broke into the Fountaine crypt in search of a lost fortune but left empty handed. Priest Canon Stuart Nairn was finally able to include this church as part of his parish along with six others in 1988 and now some agreement has been reached with the landowners, where visitors can walk, though not drive, to the church. However even today access inside is very rare as the church remains locked except for one Saturday a month (April to September). The interior today is still a story of near dereliction with the walls black and green from damp and mould. See the video below for an exploration of this church and rare photographs of the inside of the crypt.
