Gimme Powder - Burton 2023 Straight Chuter Review

As the season is slowly drawing to a close, March is also the month when many snowboard companies release their 2023 models, seemingly so the southern hemisphere can get to ride on them ahead of us in the north. I was lucky enough to get my hands on the Straight Chuter, one of Burton's most powder specific boards. In it's third year of production under the Family Tree line of boards, like the name suggests the Straight Chuter is designed for going fast and charging hard. Designed with Danny Davis, it incorporates a lot of Burton's tech to make this stiff yet playful feeling board that excels in open spaces and in deep powder. Specs: 18mm taper for supreme float 40 set back for natural position riding even the deepest pow Directional camber bend; camber under the feet with rocker nose Sidecut set back over camber zone for natural riding feel Directional flex, softer nose and stiffer tail to bust through uneven snow or deep pow, but offering pop and power through tail Flex about 8/10, got a lot of power available but have to work for it Larger side radius designed for going fast and big carves Dragonfly 600g Core, strong wood where you need it and softer wood where you don't to minimize weight but keeping board strong 45 degree carbon highlights, keeping torsional strength in the board and lightweight WFO Base - Burton's second highest for keeping speed across flatter sections and finding new powder zones Rode this board in some perfect conditions out in Lakeside Bowl on Whistler Blackcomb. This is a huge area, and on a 20cm (8") powder day it was in a real powder slashing mood. First impressions is this board wants to go fast. It is shaped kinda like a missile. It is also has amazing float and great carries it's speed, I was often the one to try to break new trail and push further over into the fresh powder. Going into the tighter trees I was worried it would be too slow turning, but the directional camber bend and short tail still gives it good ability to pivot and change edge to edge quickly to avoid any obstacles. Tried riding switch in some powder and felt pretty comfortable. Setup on the board is pretty directional, despite that not too hard to control and offers much more switch especially when navigating tight areas. Much better than a full swallow tail. Really enjoyed riding this board. Thanks again Burton Snowboards for the hook up. Definitely a great board for Whistler's heavier snow conditions.
