Tim Keller Sermon Summary - The Truth About Hell (Unofficial)

Tim Keller teaches about Jesus' experience on the Cross and his descent into Hell throughout his sermon titled "The King is Dead". Matthew 27:45-54 discusses these events and include one of 7 statements made by Jesus on the Cross. The featured phrase for this sermon is "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Keller claims this is the most perplexing and disturbing statement uttered by Jesus as he screamed it out at His death. Tim asks, "why is Jesus appearing to be unable to face death?" He discusses how commentators from ages past have questioned why a false religion would put these words in the mouth of their hero? From the very beginning this phrase has been misunderstood. In fact, in the Gospel, people believed he was calling out to Elijah. Timothy Keller claims the question tells us two things: 1) It shows what Jesus was really suffering--not lamenting physical or emotional distress but the loss of his Father. This point illustrates that Jesus did, in fact, descend to Hell. He was plunged into utter darkness. Tim explains the concept of entropy and its impact on the physical universe and in our souls. He explains that all of our souls are moving toward spiritual destruction, but to some extent God is keeping all of us from coming apart. He adds all good experiences are beams of light from God. Worldly success is evidence of God giving us over to our lusts and sins. Tim says that without God's intervention that people will be given their desires and it will lead to their ruin. Jesus was banished from God's presence. In fact, Jesus banishment was worse than any other being. Tim says "no one has ever gone to hell that didn't want to". We all echo the sentiment better to rule in hell than serve God---made famous by C.S. Lewis analysis on the Old Testament. Tim Keller explains that Jesus is the only one who went to Hell reaching for God. He is the only one who went loving and praying to the Father. For this reason, his suffering superceded those of us who go willingly through our sins. Tim claims that what Jesus suffered in a matter of hours is worse than what others suffer for an eternity. Jesus demonstrates his power by staying true and in control from Hell's heart. And he obeyed the Father for our sake, despite the torment of separation from God's glory. In life, Jesus did everything he did depending on the Holy Spirit. On the Cross he quoted Psalm 22:1. In his final moments he was meditating and clinging to the Word of God. Keller repeats that when Jesus was at the end of hope, he clung to Scripture. Tim Keller reads Psalm 22 to the congregation. Jesus let the Scriptures trump what he thought/felt. You can't accept Jesus without Scripture. Every challenge Jesus faced, he faced with Scripture. Tim says he was completely saturated with the Bible. "It's where Scripture disagrees with you, that helps you the most." - TK Tim states that to accept God, you have to allow him to contradict you. He exhorts us to commit to Bible study and prayer for if Jesus couldn't survive without it, how can we? Tim leaves us with the challenge, if Jesus was true to you, be true to him.
