Tim Keller "Losing & Finding God" - Sermon Summary (Unofficial)

Tim Keller graced us with a phenomenal sermon in 1997 titled "Losing & Finding God". He centers on the passage Psalm 42 and teaches Christians what to do when God disappears from their life. Visit thegospelinlife.com for the full sermon. Keller references the commentary of John Calvin who described the Psalms as being the "complete anatomy of the soul". Every experience of the human condition is found there. Tim Keller calls it the "manual for the human heart". The Psalms are said to address the condition, causes & treatment for the heart. This Psalm was not written by David. The author was a musician and worship leader for the nation of Israel who was exiled during the time of the writing. The tone of the psalm is one of despair. Keller states that he retained a conceptual knowledge of God, but not a connection with the Living God. He was said to be experiencing a sense that life had lost its meaning. Tim mentions that this psalm is not one of repentance. Though 1/3 of the psalms feature lamentations, this is not one. God is not answering prayer and has withdrawn his presence from this individual's experience. Tim Keller makes the point here that you can feel an absence of God even without a guilty conscience. Tim mentions 5 reasons why God may withdraw his intimacy from us for a time. He calls these reasons the "5 E's". 1) Exile Cause "You cannot have a rich experience of God if you are a Lone Ranger Christian." - Timothy Keller. The Psalmist reflects that he misses his prior community. Christians require community and can only fully experience God together. 2) Enemies Cause Tim states that when things go awry in your life, the world will challenge your faith in God and question why he doesn't intervene on your behalf. Also, tiny accusations will filter into your consciousness such as "all Christians are hypocrites" or "why does God allow evil atrocities to occur?" Keller confesses that he experienced seasons of self accusation in 1991 and 1993. 3) Employment Cause No counselor or mentorship can cut you off from wisdom. We need others to pour into us and we must be doing the same for others. We are to pray, read our Bibles and participate in the struggles of others. Tim exhorts us to not be "useless Christians". 4) Eating Cause Sometimes depression can be linked to physiological conditions. Tim references the fact that Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones, the famous English minister began his career as a physician. Dr. Jones understood that are physical bodies are important to God and we must care for them. 5) Enigma Cause Tim Keller reminds us that sometimes God allows us to be spiritually dry. He provides us three recommended remedies. 1 - Speak Biblical truth and Scripture to ourselves 2 - Continue to hope in God 3 - Praise God despite your feelings and increase your discipline of prayer & reflection. "If you are getting nothing from the Throne of Grace, you'll certainly get nothing from staying away." - Sir John Newton Tim Keller's final thought is to tell us to formatively read the Bible instead of glossing through passages in an informative way... And, of course, pray through this Psalm!
