Monster Shop-Made Tools vs. 1000lbs of Steel (The Big Boring is a BEAST!)

Its time to bring out the big guns! In this video we are machining 1000lbs (460kg) of 4140 steel with three shop made monster tools in our custom cross-slide tool holder. This is the the largest part we've ever machined in the big CNC... and it's WILD. The part being machined is a pilot bit nose cone for our MEGADRILL - a 3m drill bit that's goes to depths of 250m for underground mining ventilation shafts. Tools we're using: 1) The KRAKEN. A shop made 110mm custom HTS style tool to drill over 500mm deep. This is the first time we've ever run this crazy tool... and it's an absolute weapon. 2) KONG. Fitted with a Kennametal KM63 CNMG head, this boring bar does the bulk of the work in our CNC. Heavy cuts and always fun to run, but it's a dwarf compared to... 3) THE BEAST. Our biggest, baddest and newest metal monster. 95mm in diameter fitted with a Kennametal KM80 head. It's a fully shop made tool with through coolant and capable of boring up to half a meter deep! This is our most action packed video yet. Let's get machining... Our job is to keep rigs running in the field, constantly making the gear they need to get the job done. We run two CNC's, manual repair lathes, mills and are constantly having to make weird and wonderful shop made tools to get the job done. We're a little shop that takes on big projects. The latest is our MEGADRILL project where we're manufacturing a 3.0m drill bit that'll weigh upward of 20 tonnes. We release one video a week (usually on Friday/Saturday) to give you all a window into our heavy duty world. #australianmachinist #machinistlife #machineshoplife #cnclife #heavydutyequipment #australiandrilling
