Phillip Sear plays 'the American sigh (literal translation)', the first of four 'danzas americanas' by the Spanish composer Martin Sánchez Allú (1823-58). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Allú began his musical life as a chorister in Salamanca, where he studied and was based while he pursued a career as a teacher and touring pianist. He also found success as a composer of operas and zarzuelas. From 1848 he lived in Madrid, and one of his friends there was Marcial del Adalid, who is also represented on this channel. 'La Isla de Cuba' was published in 1859, a year after the composer's death, and it is fascinating to see how Cuban ;music' was seen to equate to 'American music' in Europe at that time.
