#3 from 'Mozaïque', Op.18/19 ----------------------------------------------- Aminollah Hossein (also sometimes known as André Hossein, and born Aminoullah Husseinoff) was born in Samarkand in 1905 and died in Paris in 1983. He lived a few years in Persia (his mother was Persian) but left to study in Paris (at the Conservatoire) and spent most of his life there. Hossein was interested in Persian history, and became a Zoroastrian. Most of his works are Persian-themed. He wrote film scores and ballet music, and became a virtuoso on the 'tar', a popular instrument in Iran and Azerbaijan. The set of pieces called 'Mozaïque'—published in 1942—actually comprises his Opp.18 and 19. Structurally, the use in the outer sections of this piece of intervals that gradually augment reminds one of Messiaen's use of a similar device in 'L'échange', the third of his 'Vingt regards'.
