Gaited horse riding is so different from other riding disciplines. So many little things affect how your horse gaits from your body position to the horse's frame you ride it in, terrrain, inclines and declines and different types of footing. Also how much contact you ride them with and saddle fit. . There are so many things that affect them that do not affect the regular trotting horses. These things can and will cause your horse to gait, stay in gait or fall out of gait or not gait at all. When switching to gaited, the biggest misconception is they are easy. They are not easy, the only easy thing, is when they gait well you do not bounce but everything else takes work and many are not trained as well as the trotting horses because they are calmer and smooth, so riders who do not have much training can get by riding them. But this is not safe. To get the best out of your gaited horse, it should be trained well and you should also be trained well on how to help it to gait. The first step to getting there is to admit, they are different and this is a different riding discipline then the one you did before.
