When riding a trotty horse, there are certain things that make it trottier that you should know, such as arena footing, poles and hills. To help the horse stay in gait you have to keep it in different frames depending on the gait, then build up its condition to hold the gait in a more neutral frame. But if you ride with the horse too relaxed with head down it is harder to keep them in the lateral gaits such as the saddle gait, which requires some tension in the spine and neck. Gaited horse riding is a discipline, just like dressage, jumping, reining, western pleasure etc. and if you want the best gait you have to realize you have to ride them different to keep them in gait.
