The Ocean-Lands: Mud Within the Earth System

The Ocean-Lands: Mud Within the Earth System is an art practice-based research project, which examines the new ‘mud-scapes’ in Iceland, Greenland, and Denmark, focusing on the social, political, and bio-chemical effects, of their motion. For millennia, static muds facilitated cultural exchanges across legal boundaries. Warming global temperatures result in their motion. Melting glaciers and inland ice result in mud. Ancient mud-flats and swamps reclaim space as human occupation recedes. Permafrost melts and sinks; land slips; lakes recede, and their beds collapse. Swelling muds slide toward the oceans, helping to facilitate the increasingly garbled circulations of the Earth System. The project explores ‘The Social-Organisational Effects of Ocean-Land Muds in Motion’ and ‘The Bio-Communicative Effects of the Ocean-Land Muds in Transition’, as part of the larger attempt to build a new ethical and aesthetic public language capable of communicating the crisis within the Earth System. The outputs will be a film, large maps and a publication. Along the way exhibitions, pod casts and other stuff will be made. Rikke Luther works as a fine artist and researcher. The current work explores the new interrelations created by environmental crisis as they relate to Earth System. Those relation compass themes related to landscape, language, politics, financialisation, law, biology, and economy, that expressed in drawn images, photography and film, which can then be investigated in pedagogical situations. https://rikkeluther.dk/ The ROCS lecture series invite leading scholars across disciplines to discuss research on diverse topics involving ocean, climate, and society. The aim of the series is to provide an interdisciplinary platform for multiple layers of similar concerns and explore the interconnections that emerge when topics on ocean, climate, and society are brought into critical proximity with one another. ROCS is a transdisciplinary centre that applies innovative technologies and analysis that, for the first time, enables descriptions of entire ecosystems in relation to climate development through historical time and the heritages of human societies. The overarching aim is to elucidate how human-ecosystem-climate relationships shape past, present, and future worlds.
