Maritime literature and the importance of blue humanities in times of climate change

The importance of the ocean when confronting past and present climate changes cannot be underestimated. In this presentation Auður Aðalsteinsdóttir, postdoctoral researcher at ROCS, and Søren Frank, professor of comparative literature at the University of Southern Denmark, highlight the role of blue humanities in environmental discussions and describe the changing role of the ocean in maritime literature. They argue that as we grow more aware of the urgent need to transform mankind’s relationship with its environment, literary descriptions of the ocean such as can be found in Hallgrímur Helgason’s recent book series, where the ocean is depicted as a carnivalesque element, offer creative ways for changing our perspectives. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The ROCS lecture series invite leading scholars across disciplines to discuss research on diverse topics involving ocean, climate, and society. The aim of the series is to provide an interdisciplinary platform for multiple layers of similar concerns and explore the interconnections that emerge when topics on ocean, climate, and society are brought into critical proximity with one another. ROCS is a transdisciplinary centre that applies innovative technologies and analysis that, for the first time, enables descriptions of entire ecosystems in relation to climate development through historical time and the heritages of human societies. The overarching aim is to elucidate how human-ecosystem-climate relationships shape past, present, and future worlds.
