ANGOLA: BRITAIN'S DIANA PRINCESS OF WALES VISIT UPDATE

(14 Jan 1997) English/Nat Princess Diana chatted with dozens of youngsters maimed by land mines on Tuesday, visibly shocked by the horrors of Angola's war, On the second day of her mission to highlight the horror of land mines, the Princess of Wales visited an orthopaedic centre, where she saw artificial limbs fitted to amputees. The Angola visit marks a restoration of ties between the Princess and the British Red Cross, broken off after her traumatic divorce last year from Prince Charles. The Princess of Wales was comforting 13 year-old Sandra on Tuesday - one of Angola's many mine victims. The girl had her left leg amputated above the knee after triggering a mine in 1994. At the time, she was taking care of her infant brother as their mother worked in the fields. The mine victims, many of them innocent woman and children, are now learning to live with fitted artificial limbs. Princess Diana, whom some of the children called "the princess of peace," is on a mission to raise awareness of Angola's suffering. The Princess than visited Viana, a squalid shanty town 40 kilometres (24 miles) from the capital Luanda. It's at Viana that the Red Cross provide mine awareness classes for Angolans in a bid to reduce the number of unsuspecting land mine victims who lose limbs. Angola is the second most heavily mined war zone in the world, after Cambodia, and has to deal with a legacy of 12 (m) million mines sown indiscriminately and without record. With a relatively small population of 11 (m) million, there is more than one mine per person. After Viana, it was back to Angola's capital, where the Princess of Wales was welcomed with tea at the United Nations. Peter Isaacs, Head of the United Nation de-mining program in Angola and a mine victim himself, hopes Diana will continue to give her support to the cause. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I gave Princess Diana an ex personal mine, which I hope she keeps on her desk to remind her every day that people are actually risking their life to try and do something about this problem. And indeed, worldwide people are actually standing on mines and either being killed or being very seriously injured." SUPER CAPTION: Peter Isaacs, Head of U-N De-mining program in Angola On Wednesday, the Princess is to visit the central city of Huambo, site of the war's fiercest siege. There she will walk through a carefully cleared patch of minefield and detonate a mine by remote control.
