ANGOLA: BRITAIN'S DIANA PRINCESS OF WALES VISIT

(16 Jan 1997) English/Nat A plea by Britain's Princess Diana for a worldwide ban on land mines on Wednesday sparked a political row back in England. Her comments, made during her trip to war-torn Angola, drew angry comments from some members of Britain's ruling Conservative Party. The controversy cast a shadow over her visit to Cuito - believed to be the most mined town in the world - to inspect the damage done in 20 years of civil war. Princess Diana's trip to Angola continued Wednesday with a visit to a landmine clearing operation in the country's remote central highlands. After walking along a path cleared through a mine field, she herself detonated a mine by remote control. Princess Diana - in Angola on a four-day mission aimed at focusing world attention on mines - toured Cuito, believed to be the most mined town in the world. It was here that the two sides in the 20-year Angolan civil war faced each other, just 20 yards apart across the main street. Back in Britain, a war of words was taking place following Diana's plea on Monday for a worldwide ban on anti-personnel landmines. Her plea provoked a sharp reaction from some members of the ruling Conservative party who criticised her stand because she appears to have departed from the government's policy. One unidentified government minister said she was "ill-advised" and a "loose cannon." In Angola, the Princess, who has been briefed on the political row her comments have caused, said she was just trying to help. UPSOUND: (Reporter) "A government minister back home has said you are a loose cannon by supporting this campaign. Do you have any reaction to that? (Princess Diana) I'm only trying to highlight a problem that's going on all around the world, that's all." The British ambassador to Angola, who accompanied Princess Diana on her trip, staunchly defended her. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I don't think there is any disquiet at all. We are very happy that the princess has come here. It's a most successful visit and I hope sincerely that the rest of the visit will be equally successful." SUPER CAPTION: John Hart, British Ambassador Diana's four day visit to Angola took on an edge of danger Wednesday with a trip to a land mine clearing operation in Huambo, 330 miles southeast of the capital Luanda. After donning the necessary protective gear, Diana gingerly walked a narrow corridor cleared through a minefield. Engineers explained their daily routine for the clearing of the deadly weapons as well as the precautions they have to take such as working well apart from each other in case there is an explosion. At the end of the visit, Diana detonated a mine by remote control. Last year in Geneva, the international Conference on Conventional Weapons declared that land mines should be abolished within 10 years, but it stopped short of formally outlawing them. More than 30 countries support complete elimination of mines but the vast majority regard them as an important weapon of self-defence.
