Numb and Numb-er (what is a local anaesthetic)

When you are having a simple operation, you might be given the choice between having a local anaesthetic (where you stay awake during the surgery) or a general anaesthetic (where you are asleep while you have your operation). This film aims to give children and families the information they need to make an informed decision. This is a free resource to share on your hospital website when shared from our YouTube channel. During a local anaesthetic you will be given a small injection to numb the area that needs operating on. Though you will be awake during your operation, you won’t feel any pain as your surgeon operates (they will check before they begin). Your operation won’t take too long, and when it is finished, after a few checks, you should be able to go home. During a general anaesthetic you won’t be unable to eat or drink for a number of hours before your surgery. You will be in hospital for longer (sometimes even overnight). You will be given anaesthesia to numb your body, and more drugs to keep you asleep while your have your operation, and when you wake up, you will have to wait longer before you can go home (watch our film ‘A Little Deep Sleep’ to learn more about having a general anaesthetic). The film was made through interviews and recording made on location in a children’s hospital. It draws closely on the personal stories of children who have experienced a local anaesthetic, ForMed worked in collaboration with Richard Thomson and Mr Nick Wilson Jones (Surgeons from Morriston Hospital). The film was produced for The Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery, Morriston Hospital, Swansea. It was funded by Swansea Bay University Health Board and the Swansea Bay health Charity.
