Medtner: Sonata Minacciosa/Orageuse (Eric Xi Xin Liang)

Recorded on Feburary 21st, 2023. Learned and refined in approximately 12.5 hours. How incredibly exciting it is to record this work! I believe this was the first ever work I encountered by Medtner around 3 years ago and I immediately fell in love with his major piano sonatas as well as his piano concertos. This sonata, along with Sonata Romantica, Sonata-Ballade, and Sonata Night Wind are my favourites. After working through Sorabji's works, I have a very good intuitive sense of how to approach Medtner's works, as well as Szymanowski's likewise. Like Sorabji's works, this piano sonata seems largely improvisatory (though not uninstructed by the score), yet still is loosely held together by recurrent motifs and ideas. However, with these properties comes a huge burden of making sure each moment has its "rightful place" within the piece, giving each system sufficient nuance and emphasis while being careful not to overemphasize anything too much, else momentum is lost. As well, because of the sheer number of written speed changes by the composer (rit., accel., piu mosso, etc.), each change should be precisely calculated and consistent, else, again, momentum is lost. I'm guessing this is what people are talking about when they say this sonata is difficult? Technically speaking, it is also technically challenging in some areas, but I'm supposing it's keeping it all together that's difficult and maybe memory as well. Just fun for me though :)))) "minacciosa" means "menacing", while "orageuse" means "stormy" Also, how many composer references and styles do you recognize in this sonata? [0:00] Allegro sostenuto, concentrando [2:25] L’istesso tempo (ma con entusiasmo) [5:00] concentrando (C minor) [8:42] Fuga: Sempre al rigore di tempo [11:17] Tempo I, concentrando [12:50] A tempo (con entusiasmo) [14:55] Allegro non troppo mobile e risoluto (ma sempre poco rubato, quasi Cadenza) [16:01] Coda: Sempre animato (al rigore di tempo) [17:27] Molto animato (ma ritmico) All movements from Opus Clavicembalisticum I've recorded:    • Kaikhosru Sorabji: Opus Clavicembalis...   "VIIa.
