Irish National Anthem – electric guitar version by Dez Harrington

Jimi Hendrix had 'The Star Spangled Banner.' Brian May had 'God Save the Queen.' Today, I bring you Amhrán na bhFiann – 'The Soldier's Song.' What was to become the Irish National Anthem was originally scored by Patrick Feeney in 1909. Our history had been checkered with famine, invasion, religious persecution, failed rebellions and forced emigration, but at this point in the early 20th century our country was to go through many more years of turmoil yet before an unsteady peace was established following the tumultuous formation of a two-state solution on the island, which remains in place to this day. Over the last few years we have commemorated the 100-year anniversaries of the historic events that took place in Ireland during this time period in our 'decade of centenaries', of which this year marks the end. 100 years on from the inception of our state, I celebrate today with my electric guitar version of Amhrán na bhFiann ('The Soldier's Song') – our national anthem. In present-day Ireland, the economic, cultural and political freedom we enjoy that men and women fought and died for gives me an immense sense of pride – and the opportunity to record and produce music like this. I hope you like my version of Amhrán na bhFiann on the electric guitar!
