Watch me play 'Cliffs of Dover' – at the actual Cliffs of Dover!

On this day in 1990, Eric Johnson released his acclaimed second studio album, 'Ah Via Musicom', featuring his magnum opus piece 'Cliffs of Dover' at track 3. 'Cliffs' had already become a staple at Eric's shows and legendary in the virtuoso guitar world following widespread praise for his live performance of the piece at the famous Austin City Limits in 1988. This latter was the first version I was introduced to many years ago. Seeing that performance has had a lasting impact on me, and I have wanted to cover the piece for many years. So today, I bring you my cover of 'Cliffs of Dover', based mostly on that ACL '88 version. This monumental recording also offered some fantastic camera angles that allow us to study the Johnson method in great detail with our eyes as well as our ears - a fact that I made good use of in my own attempt at the piece. The EJ style was a big departure from my usual technique. Around two years ago I had begun a quest to radically change my picking style anyway, and thankfully the new technique I had developed was fairly well-suited to the distinctive Johnson playbook; fast pentatonic runs requiring escaping the strings on an upstroke and economy picking, the latter of which especially was brand-new to me. Despite the seemingly compatible nature of my technique with EJ's playing on paper, learning this piece was to be one of the most difficult tasks I had ever undertaken in music and I practiced this stuff for an unholy amount of time. Outside of the technique, which is as peerless as it is blazing and clinically precise as it is totally novel, the music itself is a work of timeless ethereal genius. Johnson takes us on a journey through dreamy clean chord inversions, to distinctive improvised melodies hinting at ambiguous implied chord changes, to those immortal melodies and free lead guitar playing over six and a half minutes that have inspired countless musicians the World over. EJ completes the triple-threat with one of the most beloved and oft-emulated electric guitar tones of all time. Some of the most important elements of the post-guitar signal chain to the Johnson tone include Marshall 100 W and 50 W JCM '60s heads on very specific settings, Fender Twin Reverb combos, the BK Butler Tube Driver, analog delay and modulated reverb - all of which I incorporated into my tone for this recording using captures on the Neural DSP Quad Cortex (including some very nice captures of the Hermida Dover Drive I found on the Cortex Cloud), while still putting my own spin on it and adapting to my own playing style and choice of guitar. I travelled all the way from the North-West of Ireland to Dover via car to shoot this video at the actual White Cliffs in Kent, England – I wanted to honour the piece by playing it in the original location that inspired it! I hope you enjoy my cover of 'Cliffs of Dover.' I've been learning and practicing harder than ever the last year or so and I hope to release more covers of my guitar heroes very soon along with plenty more TRAD LIB stuff we have planned, so make sure you SUBSCRIBE so you don't miss them!
