POWERS John’s Lane 12 yo Single Pot Still & 2 Powers blends |

Today, as we’re in March, it’s Saint Patrick’s time, or « The Irish Month », I realised that I still haven’t reviewed on video (though I talked about it in my website & awarded it too) the POWERS « John’s Lane » release, so it was about time to review it (precise time stamps below) : -POWERS « JOHN’S LANE » Release, 12 yo, bottled 21/04/2021 (Batch L111131287), Limited edition, MIDLETON distillery (POWER’S before 1975), triple-distilled, matured in first fill Bourbon casks, then finished in Oloroso Sherry casks, non-chill filtered, but coloured, 46 % (Single-Pot Still Irish Whiskey) I also felt it could be interesting, despite the abv difference, to review also some blended whiskies under the POWER name, and also to mention its name did change, from « Pure Pot Still » to « Single Pot Still » over the years : -POWERS “SPECIAL RESERVE”, 12 yo, bottled circa 2007 (Batch L228631331), MIDLETON distillery, triple-distilled, matured in first fill Bourbon casks, then finished in Oloroso Sherry casks, chill filtered & coloured, 40 % (Disclaimer : Apologies, my fault, not having checked lately, this in not a « Pure Pot Still Irish Whiskey » but a « Blended Irish Whiskey », sorry about this mistake). But I wanted to start the session with the entry level of this series in its ancient form : -POWERS « GOLD LABEL » (“Three Swallow”), nas (around 7 yo), bottled in 2011, MIDLETON distillery, triple-distilled, matured & first & second fill Bourbon casks, chill filtered & coloured, 40 % (Irish Blended Whiskey) Last but not least, and before I do specific videos about my Cognac collection & the Cognac topic in general (& in English!), I wanted to illustrate what I say sometimes, i.e. the partly similar tasting notes that one can find in old Cognacs that remind me a lot of Irish Single Pot Still Whiskeys (hence my « Highlight of the Year » winner in the Cognac category), showing 3 examples of it from my collection (including a vintage « 1988 » from GROSPERRIN-and I did mistake talking about its founder’s statement, Jean, instead of his son, Guilhem...), and tasting 2 of them : -COGNAC RAGNAUD-SABOURIN XO « N°25 », 25 yo, « Grande Champagne », bottled circa 2019, family owned producer & wine grower, chill filtered, but non coloured, non sugared, no oak essence added, 40 %. -COGNAC VALLEIN-TERCINIER « ODYSSEE »,« Très vieux Cognac » from « Fins Bois », distilled in 2000, bottled in 2013 (Batch/Lot N°L 2000_1), family owned distillery, non-chill filtered, non coloured, non sugared, no oak essence added, 46 %. Disclaimer : Note that for Cognac, Armagnac & Rum, unlike for regulated Whisky, there also other additive than caramel colour (E150a) allowed, but that does not mean that all companies use them : Sugar (raw saccharose) and oak (essence of oak aka « essence de boisé », mainly).
