PROGRAM: With veins of ice and breath of snow, The winter wind may howl and roar; But where the mighty pine trees grow, Their sweeter melody shall soar: Beneath their sweet, viridian shade, The hermit builds his hidden bower; And their tall, ancient trunks are made, For fleeing fugitives, a tower Against the coldest, fiercest throng, Ever defiant, ever strong. The towering and majestic pine trees have captured the imagination of many people, and an example that readily springs to mind is Ottorino Respighi’s ‘Pines of Rome’ for orchestra. The pine tree is also deeply revered in East Asia—remaining stubbornly green during freezing winters, it symbolises the most desirable virtues of humanity, including nobleness and resilience of character in the face of hardship.
