“Reminiscences on an Ancient Capital”, for Piano | Original Composition

Imagine you are riding on horseback and on a secret mission under the bright moon, arriving at the grand walls and gates of an ancient capital that now lies in ruins. As you gallop through the crumbling streets, the memories of your childhood come flooding back uncontrollably. You see the market sellers and the elderly and the servants as well as the nobles. The glistening pools, lush gardens and tranquil pavilions appear to rise from the ashes. Tales of joy, sadness and intrigue come to mind as you roam around the city, lost in thought. Finally, you are brought back to the present and gallop out of this ancient place, into the quiet night… Note: This premise for the piece was conceived when I was reading about the city of Xi’an, which was known as Chang’an (i.e. Everlasting Peace) during the Han and Tang dynasties. Millennia ago, it was a city that witnessed remarkable prosperity and cultural exchange as well as disaster and bloodshed (e.g. the tyrannical rule of Qin Shi Huang, the An Lushan Rebellion).
