St Leonard the Less is located in Samlesbury, Preston. It was founded in 1096 and was first mentioned in a document in 1192. in 1196 the graveyard was consecrated by two travelling bishops. By 1598 the chapel was in ruins and the 3rd Earl of Derby Edward Stanley set about getting the funds and getting it rebuilt. following this a major restoration took place in 1899 by Thomas Miller Crook, who is buried in the cemetery. he set about installing a new roof, a clock tower, and the eight bells inside. There is an apparent witch grave on this site also. She supposedly lay beneath a yew tree and at some point had iron spikes through the grave which were thought to be in place to keep her down. The gravestone itself was thought to have cracked when she found out her husband was to re-marry. However it is now thought that the iron spikes were just to deter body snatchers, these could have potentially cracked the stone also. These were all still in place up until 1971 when the grave was vandalised and the lower half taken. Presently there's no sign of a yew tree or of the grave, but quite a few stones are covered with grass so it's possible she may be in the cemetery somewhere.
