Summer Tour of Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens - plants that thrive in hot dry conditions

In this tour, recorded in late June, we take a tour around Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens with its curator, Stephen Griffith. Starting on the Mediterranean Bank, we take in some colourful specimens which thrive in hot, dry conditions. There's the familiar Santolina chamaecyparissus (lavender cotton), with its lazy, floppy habit. Behind is a more favoured button daisy, Chrysocoma coma-aurea, which Stephen first saw on the Isles of Scilly, an escapee from Tresco Valley Gardens! Onwards, we find Lychnis coronaria in both white and pink varieties. Deeper into the Mediterranean Bank, Genista aetnensis (more commonly known as the Mount Etna broom) dazzles with a swathe of yellow blooms. Looking in the opposite direction, Callistemon citrinus 'splendens' immediately catches the eye, with its bright red bottle brush flowers. Heading down to the lower areas, we find Impatiens tinctoria, a giant Busy Lizzie, native to Uganda. And up in the dry zone border, alongside the path to the Oak Pavilion, we find an unusual hardy Aloe striatula with wonderful flowers, like a 'yellow hot poker'.
