Heian men’s fashion was more complicated than the women? | Japanese history, culture, and kodan

What’s this? Heian Period aristocratic men’s fashion was more complicated than the women? With women being forced behind closed doors as a result of the Kusuko Incident, they could be pretty loose with their choice of colors and patterns in their clothing. This was not so for the men, who had to be out working in the public. But, despite having so many restrictions, men would find their own unique fashion sense. We are going to talk about what men wore for business and for leisure, the rules and restrictions in their dress, and the colors that were forbidden to wear without permission. While referring to Takashima Katsuko’s book, 「平安ファッションの世界」"The World of Heian Fashion", I also visited the Heian Shozoku Kocho-no-kai in Kyoto to get a sense of how stylish the Heian men really were.
