What was the perfect Heian Beauty?

Trigger Warning: beauty standards for the body, face, and hair from a thousand years ago. Murasaki Shikibu and Sei Shonagon write in detail about what beauty was in their time. People in the Heian Period looked very different from you and I today. So much in fact that period dramas, such as the one on Japanese television right now, and festivals which showcase Heian period dress, do not accurately portray what Heian men and women looked like, more like what Edo men and women look like. So, in this episode, let’s discover what contemporary writers tell us about the perfect Heian beauty, and also what did they look like. We’ll also talk about the beauty regimes men and women had to do to be acceptable at court. My research comes from Takashima Katsuko’s new book 「平安ファッションの世界」and from the translated writings of Murasaki Shikibu and Sei Shonagon. 「イラストでみる 平安ファッションの世界 皇族・貴族から武士・庶民まで」高島克子作 有隣堂出版 ISBN 978-4-89660-246-3 (pages 185-195) "The Diary of Lady Murasaki" Author: Murasaki Shikibu, Translated by Richard Bowring, published by Penguin Books, ISBN 9780140435764 (pages 47-49) "The Pillow Book" Author: Sei Shonagon, Translated by Authur Waley, Published by Dover Publications, ISBN 978-0-486-83443-6 (pages 27-28) I do not recommend this copy as it is heavily abridged with no interest in explaining Heian Period culture.
