Mixing Six-Great Ocean, Summer Sun Red, Fall Poplar Yellow, Prussian, Magenta and Blueberry Mountain Looking at: Opacity Activation Liftability Granulation Wash Out Quick to activate, no scrubbing Good saturated color when wet Minimal Opacity, colors seem fairly translucent Washed out easiy- colors aren't stubborn Would like the colors to be labelled. The purple came as a bit of a surprise to me, but I welcome it As these dry, some colors do dry duller, like the red and the purple. Decided to reswatch these on Baohang, since sometimes if you get the wrong side of Shizen, the colors are weird and muted. Lol, surprise, apparently I had painted o the right side, and Beam Paints and Shizen just don't get along (for me, today, on this particular sheet) Ability to Mix Color Glazed Color Grid: Can glaze color for optical blending, although some reactivation did occur, despite trying to allow the paint to dry as much as possible. This might be an issue if applying a toning glaze AFTER base colors have been painted in, or trying to adjust the color gamut in an in-process painting. Manual Color Mixing: Challening for me to mix a good strong orange (not sure why, the materials are there), and so it's challenging to mix a brown using the purple+orange mix. Possible, but I would recommend ordering some earth pigment pigment stones to add to your palette for ease of mix. I do like the inclusion of a purple, as good strong dioxine-esque purples are difficult to mix. The Ultramarine (esque) +magenta also mixes a really nice purple, and it's very easy to mix lovely greens with the included colors. Swatching the samples: Lovely colors, but they're unlabelled. I THINK they're gouache, based on the masstone, but they could also be used as slightly opaque watercolor, and I like that kind of flexibility. I would love ot add these to the Naomi palette, but I don't know what colors these are! Refolding the palette Wanted to wait until the paint had a chance to dry Lift Test: Some colors are VERY prone to lifting- the Ultramarineesque blue especially so Pros and Cons: Pros: Handmade Small business, owned and operated by an indigenous family The paints themselves, and their packaging is LOVELY, you can tell a lot of love, pride, and care goes into their watercolors The colors don't turn soupy Quick activation Cons: A bit expensive, but with the above taken into consideration, well worth it A little challenging to mix oranges and browns with this selection, would need a few more paint stones to make a set I could easily paint with (not really that much of a con though) Note: The site DOES give pigment information, so I shall share that here. https://www.beampaints.com/collection... https://www.beampaints.com/pages/safe... Mixing Six- Great Ocean- PB29 (Gchigaaming’aande) Summer Sun Red- PR170 (Neebin Giizis’aande) Fall Poplar Yellow- Hansa PY74 (Dwaagi’Azaadibuk’aandef) Prussian- PB27 Magenta- PR122 (Wiigwaasmin’aande) Blueberry Mountain- PV23 (Miin’aande Azhbikoong ) Verdict: It's very easy to see why these paints are so popular, especially among artists who champion small business and handmade. Advice to Beam: Please label your paints- it will make identifying and reordering so much easier! I love the little sample, and would love to order those colors- but I don't know what they are! I would LOVE some pigment info/background info with the paints themselves- it makes giving it as a gift an absolute delight.
