In this week's landscape photography episode, I explore the fascinating relationship between positive, negative, and dead space in landscape photography. I travel to the tranquil lakeside town of Milang, nestled on the banks of the stunning Lake Alexandrina. The primary focus of this shoot is a picturesque jetty that extends into the lake, a perfect subject to highlight how space can dramatically affect composition. As I walk through the technical and creative aspects, I show how incorporating different types of space can transform your images, making them more balanced, intentional, and visually compelling. Despite the less-than-ideal conditions with a cloudless blue sky, I employ long exposure techniques to create some truly minimalist shots. The calm waters and stillness of the jetty offer an opportunity to simplify the scene, using negative space to emphasise the subject and convey a sense of tranquillity. By adjusting exposure times and camera settings, I’m able to achieve soft, smooth water and a balanced composition that lets the jetty stand out against the backdrop of Lake Alexandrina. It's a perfect example of how even in challenging conditions, you can craft beautiful images by mastering the relationship between different types of space.
