This lecture provides viewers with knowledge and tools to improve evidence-based clinical decision making, with an emphasis on the rational use of antibiotics. Epidemiologic measures, including number needed to treat (NNT) and number needed to harm (NNH), will be discussed utilizing clinical scenarios companion animal veterinarians are regularly faced with in practice. Number needed to treat and NNH estimate the effect of medical interventions by describing the number of patients that need to be treated to achieve a beneficial or harmful outcome, respectively. These measures are particularly useful to consider in clinical scenarios where outcomes are similar with and without treatment (e.g. uncomplicated diarrhea that is likely to resolve regardless of treatment type) and treatment scenarios that involve frequent and/or significant adverse side effects or complications.
