‘Private Tommy Atkins’ is a British Patriotic song written in 1893 by Englishmen Henry Hamilton. ‘Tommy Atkins’ being a term used for all British soldiers. It was used in relation to British soldiers as early as in 1743, though it could be older. In 1815 it started use as the generic name by the war office for infantry soldiers, later being expanded upon. Foreigners and commonwealth countries would call British soldiers ‘tommies’ in the First World War as well. Recording done by Robert Howe, unsure of the year, most likely between 1901 and 1914.
