For those unaware, I filled in on drums for the band Alluvial back in May/June on their tour with Rivers of Nihil. The bands songwriter/guitarist Wes lives in Atlanta which is how we met a few years ago. We'd always talked about the possibility of me playing for the band but things never seemed to line up. Come 2022, they needed a drummer for that tour, my schedule was open so of course I agreed to do it. Soon after that, I started playing with Invent Animate, plus Satyr had some shows at the time, so I wasn't able to continue drumming for them as cool as that would've been. My friend Zach Dean is currently holding it down for them & doing a killer job! I, however, am still proud to have gotten to play for the band so I decided to relearn this track as a little throwback. Thy Underling is probably my favorite track I played with Alluvial. It's super groovy & just hits hard. Another big reason why I decided to do this song was because I really didn't wanna bother with triggering my kick like I had on tour. This song is just slow enough to not require one, but without one, it's definitely a challenge hammering out those 16th's on a loose kick drum, even at 160 BPM. On tour, however, we played almost every song 5 BPM slower than the album tempos. This was something the band had already decided on, but I definitely didn't mind, considering how fast some of the songs are. I considered recording this one at that slower tempo & timestretching the stems since that's what I was used to, but I'd always felt like this song grooved much harder at the original album tempo (160) so I decided to just do it full speed.
