Istanpitta Isabella from a 14th Century Manuscript Performed on Medieval Gittern

From the 14th Century Tuscan manuscript in the British Library Add MS 29987, here is the medieval dance Isabella. This istanpitta (estampie in French) has four sections or puncta that are repeated with an open (aperto) and then a closed (chiuso) ending. The original manuscript notation is quite a labyrinth with the scribe using multiple unique symbols to show when the musical thread jumps back to an earlier section. Adding to the confusion, the second (secunda) section is written with the notes an interval of a third too high, likely a misplacement of the clef symbol. Lots to figure out to make a modern playable edition! Indeed, the contemporary commentator Grocheio suggested that this music was complicated enough to require concentration, which helps distract young people from wicked thoughts. Performed by Daniel Shoskes on a 5 course gut strung medieval gittern built by George Stevens. #medieval #medievalmusic
