SHAHZADA BAKHTYAR ZAHID Hailing from a well-known and respected family of Peshawar Dr Bakhtyar Zahid has extensive pediatric experience and a career spanning over thirty years. Presently, he is the Head of Paediatric department at Rehman Medical Institute. His earlier education was from prestigious institutions like St. Mary’s High school and Edward’s College Peshawar. After graduation from Khyber Medical College in 1985, he completed his House Job and initial Pediatric training from Khyber Teaching Hospital and Lady Reading Hospital respectively. He then proceeded to UK in 1990 for higher studies and further training. He gained valuable experience in various areas of pediatrics working in different hospitals across the UK and rose through various ranks of seniority (SHO, Senior SHO/Registrar, Staff grade pediatrician). He achieved the Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health from London in 1999. On his return to Pakistan in 2002, he joined the then newly built Rehman Medical Institute. He was given the challenging task of establishing a Paediatric and Neonatal Unit of International standards. Today the Paediatric unit at RMI By the grace of Allah and his untiring efforts is a state of the art Unit providing a comprehensive range of Paediatric services from Neonatology, General Paediatrics to Paediatric surgery and sub specialties like Paediatric cardiology. Dr. Bakhtyar Zahid has been actively involved in undergraduate as well as postgraduate teaching both in UK and here at Rehman Medical Institute. He is a Supervisor as well as an Examiner for FCPS/MCPS and a faculty member, Associate Professor, at Rehman Medical College. He has a keen interest in Research and has several publications to his credit. He is on the editorial board of JRMC and JRMI. His administrative capabilities have been recognized at various levels. In addition to being the Department Head, he is a Member of Hospital Ethics committee, Member of the Peer review committee and represents his department in the Academic Council. Children need different care and medications compared to adults as many drugs are processed differently in these two groups. The process of growth and development is also different in paediatric patients than in adults. The role of a paediatrician is to provide general medical services to the infants and children. The Paediatric Department at RMI provides comprehensive medical care and clinical services to childern. Being a tertiary center, it not only accepts walk-in-patients from its own Emergency and Out Patient Department but also gets direct referrals from other remote hospitals of the region as well. Neonatal Intensive Care services are available to new born babies with close follow up clinics. Both Out and Inpatient facilities are available not only to look after minor and major medical illnesses of children, but facilities of growth and developmental monitoring, nutritional requirements, neonatal and pediatric surgeries are all provided under supervision of experienced senior faculty, under one roof. The Pediatric Department also provides specialized pediatric care to children admitted under other sub specialties in the hospital. The department is actively training both undergraduate students and postgraduate trainees for MCPS and FCPS in Pediatrics.
