Photo Deconstruction - Ziegfeld Follies inspired photo shoot

I’ve always been inspired by the Ziegfeld Follies which was a series of elaborate theatrical revue productions on Broadway in New York City during the early 1900s. The showgirls in these revues worth elaborate costumes, had perfectly styled hair and makeup and performed on incredible sets. So, naturally, I wanted to do a fashion shoot inspired by these incredible performances. This image is inspired by the performer Hedy Lamarr -- one of her images in particular -- where she is wearing this big beautiful headpiece with stars all around it. I reached out to my go-to prop and costume designer Lory Sun to collaborate on this and see if she could create something similar. Sure enough, we came up with an awesome concept that I think pays homage to that piece with our own stylist twist giving it a more modern flair. Lighting: This photograph was lit with 2 strobes. Main light: Barelight D2 w/ 10 degree grid Second light: Profoto XL Deep White Umbrella with diffusion and Cyan Gel For this shoot I used the new full-frame mirrorless Canon EOS R5 which was great for retaining tack sharp focus on the subject using it's advanced face and eye tracking so I never had to worry while the model was moving around posing. The 100% auto focus also really helped as she danced and moved across the canvas so I never had to focus and recompose -- a very useful feature! Post processing I liked what came straight out of camera, but of course we're going to make some improvements. The grid darkened her legs a bit more than I liked so I lightened that up. I then also liquified her waist a bit, not because I thought she'd look better being thinner, but because the costume actually didn't completely conform to her waist. This particular model actually had a super thin waist line as she is a Burlesque model and I wanted to showcase that. I also pulled out some reds and yellows in her skin and overall desaturated the image a bit. I'm happy that I was able to take inspiration from the past and create something new. 👇 So what do you think? Do you often draw inspiration from different eras craft your shoots?
