Orchestrating Summer Days - Brian Wilson's 1965 Instrumentation: an Introduction

In 1965, Brian Wilson recorded the Beach Boys album "Summer Days and Summer Nights." It's as if he took what he'd learned from the highlights of his previous effort, the Today album, and make a follow-up that built on all the best elements of his previous work. It's very much a bridge from Early Beach Boys to mature Brian. Several new ideas and idioms show up in recording Summer Days that are a little half-baked, but come out of the oven fully cooked in 1966 and 67. This video is just a little overview / introduction to the instruments Brian had at his disposal, and used to create his backing tracks. In the future, we will go track by track through the Summer Days LP and look at the highlights of Brian's orchestration, highlights that point to his almost completely unique orchestrations of 1966-67.
