Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys started telegraphing his intentions with tracks like this -- gone was the guitar based garage pop of the group's earlier sound; here was the adult, orchestral sound that Brian would become immortalized for on Pet Sounds and the Smile Sessions. In the Back of My Mind marks several special moments in the Beach Boys catalog -- Dennis sings an incredibly emotive and bluesy lead vocal, and Brian may have done his first solo arrangement for a string section. It's a little amateurish in spots, but it succeeds in placing the dissonance of the narrator's thoughts in a literal foreground. While there is no AFM blank for the session, I assume that it is a fairly modest string section of about 10 players. I overdubbed myself playing four 1st violins, 3 2nd violins, and 2 violas. Joining the strings are Brian's increasingly important saxes, plus an oboe for good measure. This video is the product of over a year of transcription preparation.
