Curating IRL: net.art, new media and post-internet art (Chris Clarke)

See more about Digital Arts & Humanities at University College Cork: https://www.ucc.ie/en/dah/ Abstract This talk explores issues relating to the curation of new media artworks in physical exhibition spaces. As contemporary artists increasingly rely on the internet as an exhibition forum, as subject matter and as a toolbox, galleries and museums have adapted to the nomadic, often ephemeral, nature of these works by prioritizing the experiential aspects of the exhibition space. This presentation looks at different ways in which exhibition contexts (including museums, biennales, and festivals) have responded to the inherent qualities of new media art, drawing on works by the artists Jordan Bennett, Marge Monko and JODI and the Glucksman exhibitions Selective Memory: Artists in the archive and the Irish touring programme Game On: Re-newing Media art. About the Speaker Chris Clarke is Senior Curator of the Glucksman, University College Cork where he has curated exhibitions including Circadian Rhythms: Contemporary art and biological time; PRISM: The art of light; OUTPOSTS: Global borders and national boundaries; Everything Must Go: Art and the market; Selective Memory: Artists in the archive; and Fieldworks: Animal habitats in contemporary art, among others.
