One Life to Live 1/5/1990

At The Banner, Viki surprises Clint with an elaborate breakfast spread. Clint doesn’t think one little breakfast is going to save their marriage, but Viki says it’s just a start. She reminisces about a time they didn’t put the paper to bed until 4 AM and they celebrated together and fell asleep in each other’s arms. Clint says he sees through her and she’s not convincing him it’s all going to work out for them. Viki asks whether she’s the only one trying to save their marriage, and Clint implies they don’t currently have much of a marriage to save. Tina also surprises Cord with at Llanfair. Their discussion of the previous night’s events is cut short when a swarm of reporters descends on Llanfair. It turns out Tina called an impromptu press conference to talk about the Wymans and her role in catching them. Cord doesn’t like the whole thing, which he suspects is so she can portray herself as the hero and hopefully earn a reprieve from her sentence. As Cord is berating her for the publicity stunt, Herb arrives to tell her that he just got off the phone with the governor and Judge Carlin just got off the phone. In light of her efforts that led to the exposure and arrest of the Wymans, the governor has granted her a full pardon. Tina makes a personal appeal for Gabrielle’s sentence to be reconsidered as well, but Herb says he can’t discuss that with her before he talks to Gabrielle. Megan sits by as still-unconscious Max’s bedside apologizing for how cold she’s been and hoping they can still be friends. Gabrielle says the doctors are optimistic Max will pull through. Gabrielle tells Megan she wishes she had taken that bullet instead of Max, but Megan tells her not to blame herself for what happened. Max’s monitors start making noise and the doctors come in and kick both women out. Andy is fuming that the doctors won’t give her a substantive update on Max’s condition. Debra and Renee try to calm her down. Tina is walking on air after her pardon, but Cord pours cold water on her celebrations. He’s happy for her being pardoned, but he still thinks she’s been selfish and manipulative, and he’s not ready to come to terms with all of that. Raymond comes to the hospital to check in on Max and tell Megan he’s headed back to Mendorra today. Roger arrives at the newspaper office looking for Clint, but seeing Roger erases any progress Viki might have made. Roger says he won’t apologize for driving Clint off, because he’s certain Viki should forget about Clint and marry him instead. At the hospital Debra takes the call from Herb and then gives Gabrielle the good news: she’s been pardoned. A despondent Gabrielle says she’d gladly trade her freedom for Max to survive (though I don’t think that’s how pardons work in Pennsylvania). Clint returns to the office with the bad news that Max’s condition seems to have worsened, but Clint’s attitude toward his wife seems to have improved markedly. In a sheer negligee, Tina tries to seduce her husband. Cord says sex can’t solve all their problems, but Tina says it can be a start. Gabrielle goes to the church and tearfully pleads for the miracle Dan said Max needs. Gabrielle promises that if Max’s life is spared, she will devote her life to the church. At the same time at the hospital Dan and another doctor consider the seriousness of Max’s condition. As they discuss Max’s prognosis, the monitors begin to beep and Max flatlines.
