I give an overview on the structure and themes within the book of Ezra. The book of Ezra is the fifteenth book of the Old Testament. The Hebrew Bible has three sections: the Law, Prophets, and Writings. In the Hebrew Bible, Ezra and Nehemiah are found in the Writings section. Now, the books of Ezra and Nehemiah were originally considered one book called, “Ezra.” Later, it was separated by two books by Origen and Jerome around the 3rd to 4th century A.D. and Ezra was not separated into two books in the Hebrew Bible until the 15th century. The books of Ezra and Nehemiah can be divided into two periods. First, the events before the time of Ezra and Nehemiah when the Jews returned to Jerusalem and rebuilt the Temple (539–516 B.C.). Second, the events during the ministries of Ezra and Nehemiah when they helped reform and restore Jerusalem (458-430 B.C.). These two sections happen over 120 years.
