WEST LINDSEY PARISH #85: NORTH CARLTON Welcome to the first of the Carlton twins located just down from the Lincoln Cliff to the West of the A15. This is North Carlton, a linear village which sits between Scampton and Saxilby Its twin is South Carlton, which is a little bigger and located a little further along the Cliff. It used to be part of a trio of Carltons many centuries ago though, as there was a Middle Carlton too In the 13th century the manor of North Carlton was held by William Wildeker, and was transferred to Barlings Abbey prior to 1303. It remained in the hands of the Abbey until the Dissolution, when it was granted to Charles Brandon, the 1st Duke of Suffolk, who later sold it to the Monson family. That’s why one name you will definitely notice in both of the Carlton villages is Monson. However, we’ll talk more about the Monsons when we hit South Carlton. Here in North Carlton, there’s bigger fish to fry – literally – in the form of the 16th century North Carlton Hall There’s a lovely church dedicated to St Luke too, which is partially built of stone which came from Middle Carlton. The parish boundaries extends Eastwards to cover the Lincolnshire Showground, which has hosted the annual Lincolnshire Show for 137 years. Since 2015, part of Riseholme College sits within it, a college which shares links to Bishop Burton Lots to talk about then!
