GEDLING PARISH #12: RAVENSHEAD Ravenshead – “Raven’s Head” For the 12th and final time, welcome to the Nottinghamshire district of Gedling, and I’ve saved the biggest until last. This is Ravenshead, which has a population well in excess of 5,000 people. Its essentially a massive housing estate, mostly built during the 1950s and 60s although its been considerably added to in stages since then. Located on the A60 and not far away from the M1, its modern purpose is pretty simple – its a commuter village for Nottingham. Its considered to be one of the most affluent villages in Sherwood Forest, and you only have to walk around it to realise you’re in a very well off place. Ravenshead developed from several distinct suburban residential areas, including Fishpool, Larch Farm, Abbey Gates and Kighill, all of which used to form parts of the parish of Blidworth and the Liberty of Newstead. The name Ravenshead can be traced back to at least the 12th century. Much of the area was originally covered by large tracts of sandy heath – which did at least help its industrial cause for a while in the form of sand quarrying, which first took place here in 1919. The population here is one of the most diverse in the county. Here we’ll meet the gates of Newstead Abbey, the Pilgrim Oak, four pubs and more Sherwood Forest legend.
