My doubts kept growing until it was GAME OVER - Larenzo Reid

Today I spoke with Larenzo Reid, who grew up in a Baptist environment and tried for decades to understand and defend the faith, but ultimately deconverted as the truth claims of Christianity fell apart. We touched on many topics, including: • Attending church regularly as a child, but sensing that even at a young age, he was already questioning his beliefs. • Sensing his doubts increase when a pastor incorrectly interpreted the story of the "eye of the needle," saying that rich people go to hell, which led him to seek answers by studying the Bible and other sources independently. • Noticing inconsistencies in the teachings and interpretations of pastors, who often lacked historical and cultural context. • Finding his questions about were not welcomed by church leaders, who saw them as challenges to their authority. • Being encouraged by his family to pursue his intellectual curiosity and to speak his mind, which helped him to continue exploring his doubts despite backlash from the church. • Desiring not to leave Christianity but to understand it better and to be a more devout Christian by grasping the historical and cultural backgrounds of biblical stories. • Traveling to Israel, Rome, and other places, where he saw firsthand the historical and archaeological contexts of biblical stories, further fueling his doubts. • Finding that his firsthand experiences, combined with his independent studies, were leading him to see contradictions between what he was taught in church and what he observed in reality, particularly regarding the story of Jesus, the Old Testament, and the role of Christianity in history. • Criticizing the Bible's morality, especially concerning issues like slavery, genocide, and child sacrifice, which he found inconsistent with the idea of a benevolent deity. • Exploring other philosophies, such as Stoicism and Hermeticism, which provided alternative frameworks to understand life and the universe, and ultimately helping him overcome his fear of death and let go of the concept of heaven and hell. • Fully deconverting from Christianity, and consequently facing pushback, criticism, and even death threats from Christians. • Hearing pastors privately acknowledge the inaccuracies in their teachings but feeling trapped by financial obligations and fear of community backlash. • Starting his YouTube channel, "Deconstructing Christianity," originally as a resource for his children, but now a platform to help others who are questioning their faith. • Emphasizing the importance of understanding oneself and pursuing personal growth outside of religious structures and advocating for self-love and self-trust.
