Jesse Malin: "Indian Summer", Live at Schubas (2006)

The second video in our “From The Casks” video series is a 2006 acoustic performance by Jesse Malin at Schubas Tavern in Chicago. This performance of “Indian Summer” is an outtake from the GloNo Video documentary that Whiskey Bender Productions created for the Glorious Noise website. (You can view the GloNo documentary on the Whiskey Bender YouTube Channel. It remains one of our all time favorites of the 30+ videos we created for Glorious Noise.) In October 2006 Jesse was in Chicago for a one-off acoustic show with Christine Smith backing him up on keyboard and vocals. Somehow we got to spend the entire afternoon with him prior to the show, picking him up at the airport and taking him to the hotel and club. He gave us a long interview that covered his musical history and let us follow him with a camera during a trip to a nearby vintage store (which included a Ratso Rizzo impersonation as he crossed the street – “I’m walkin’ here!). We set-up and shot sound check, hung with him in the greenroom, met former D Generation guitarist Richard Bacchus (who was the opening act), and recorded the full show with 3 cameras. Jesse was (and IS) one of our absolute favorite songwriters and performers of all-time, but it’s not always a good idea to meet your musical heroes. So it was a relief to find him to be as friendly, funny and entertaining in-person as he is onstage. The Schubas show took place a few months before the release of “Glitter In The Gutter”, and it featured a number of songs from the forthcoming album, as well as songs from “The Fine Art of Self Destruction and “The Heat”, a couple of great covers, and a very cool acoustic duo version of D Generation’s “Capital Offender” with Richard joining Jesse onstage. Fun Facts: the song “Indian Summer” from “The Heat” album contains the lyric that gave the “Glitter in the Gutter” album its title (FYI: it’s an Oscar Wilde quote). Also, Jesse’s reference to the Mets in the opening verse is because they had just lost their playoff game that night… which is why he says he’s “happy to be drinking in Chicago tonight” rather than New York.
