Marah: "Pigeon Heart", Live at Schubas (2006)

This week’s “From The Casks” video is Marah performing an acoustic version of “Pigeon Heart” live at Schuba’s Tavern in 2006. On July 28th, 2006, Marah played two shows in one night. The early show was a stripped-down, (kind of) acoustic set with band leaders Dave and Serge Bielanko backed up by Kirk “The Barber” Henderson on keyboards and bass. The late show was a fiery-rock show with the full band. As I recall, we secured permission to record the early show at the very last minute, the night before or possibly even the day of the show. We were filming for another GloNo Video feature, but, unfortunately, there was no time for the band members to do an interview. So we shot the early show, and rocked out to the late show. What to say about Marah? We could write a book, or, more appropriately, make a documentary about what is undoubtedly one of the greatest live rock and roll bands we’ve ever had the joy to sweat, shout and stagger along to in a packed club reeking of whiskey and beer. The passionate performances of the brothers Bielanko are unmatched, and the songwriting is at turns literary, fun, journalistic, verbose, rocking, soulful, exhilarating, funny and heartbreaking, classic and original, mixing elements of Springsteen with The Replacements, adding a banjo here, some harmonica there, a dash of punk attitude, and yet somehow sounding singularly like Marah. They’ve been championed by Nick Hornby, Stephen King and The Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen (who invited them onstage to play with him at Giant’s Stadium sometime back in the aughts). Why the Bielanko brothers have never gotten as big as some other “brother” bands – say those led by the Davies or the Gallaghers – is a rock & roll mystery with the usual elements of bad luck and self-sabotage peppered in. But it doesn’t really matter to those of us who have experienced Marah in all its glory. There’s a small, but devoted fan-base that stretches across the country, across the pond and across the world. The brothers don’t play out much these days, but when they do (usually in or around their hometown of Philadelphia), people come from literally all around to world to sing and shout along with one of the best rock and roll bands of the past 25 years. The status of the band at this point seems unknown and in doubt. Serge focuses mostly on writing these days - check out his essays at SergeBielanko.com (some are about his adventures with Marah). Dave is something of a shadowy mystery. But, like that famous fictional boxer from their hometown (“Where’d you go Mr. Rocky Balboa?”), I would never count Marah out. These guys have been knocked-down before only to rise from the canvas and blow the roof off the joint. Here’s to hopes for another unlikely comeback!
