Today we travel back to the wonderful nation of France and "prendre le Crampton" abourd the SNCF. Initially of English design, the Crampton-type engines were meant for express services during the 1840s, as evident by the large driving wheel. For ease of maintenance, the link-motion and valve gear are located outside the running board causing the engine to have outside frames. At this time, the footplate was rather small and a bit crammed with the wheels on either side of the crew, not to mention the oscillation caused by such torque and raw power. The engine never really caught on in the British Isles, but traveling across the Channel caused a sensation to the French. In this compilation is the only example of a Crampton locomotive to operate in preservation: 4-2-0 or (2-2)-2-0 No. 80 "Le Continent," currently on display at Cité du Train at Mulhouse.
