Talk # 7 of the Pratchett Project Conference 2020 Online Kamil Karaś This paper will analyse the sources and aims of humour in a number of Terry Pratchett’s novels. With reference to Koestler’s theory of inferiority, as well as other theories of humour, I will claim that humour in Pratchett’s novels depends on techniques such as lowering and degrading, unexpected juxtapositions, and playing with generic and textual references. I will consider techniques and objects of humour in three Discworld novels – Interesting Times (1994), Unseen Academicals (2009) and Snuff (2011) – to illustrate how Pratchett parodies heroic fantasy, laughs at social fads such as football, and reflects on social issues such as violence and human rights. It seems plausible that Terry Pratchett started as a parodist of overused genres like heroic fantasy, and then began to write satirical novels that tackle a variety of social phenomena, eventually to link the parodic and satirical function in various configurations.
