Volunteering

One of my friends shared a story about one event recently almost had to be canceled because there were not enough volunteers. This makes me wonder about the future…will people understand the importance of volunteering? Or will we see volunteering as a chore more than a social responsibility? What do you think? - #reallyrenca #volunteer #deaf #deafpeople #world #willingheart #content #contentcreator #deafcontentcreator - I have been observing for a while and recognize that the concept of “volunteering” – the art of being willing to do something to help out or support is dying. I do wonder why. Volunteering is one of the biggest foundations for “running” a community- both hearing and Deaf alike. Volunteering is one of the needs for a community to function. Volunteering for a non-profit organization, programs, Deaf schools, events, etc- all are needed. I have noticed people saying these three reasons: I just don’t want to do it and say “oh there are other people!” or “what’s in it for me?” kind of thing. The second one is they are burnt out- they have volunteered so often and no one else is stepping up too. The third one is technology’s “fault.” If we know we have technology among us, we can also change that- we should not use that as an excuse. We can be aware that there is technology, but still show up to come help or support- be assertive. I am a bit worried as I am starting to see “volunteering” fade away. I see many places struggle to find volunteers to help. I do understand that there needs to be a balance between some stuff that can be compensated, but some others do not need compensation- it’s just part of being a human. We volunteer to help out and give support in many different ways. It can be like a community event, a club, at a Deaf school, and more. You know, if we ALL volunteered for different things and helped each other out, life would be balanced between responsibilities instead of relying on the same group to volunteer. Well, I am just sharing my thoughts as I am seeing “volunteering” slipping away before my very eyes. Now question for YOU. Why do you think the art of volunteering is fading away? Why are people not volunteering anymore? Just a question for y’all.
