Communication plus community creates connection

Communication works with community. The well being of a Deaf/HoH person increases when not only they can communicate but also found a community where they feel belonged. When we advocate for sign language, we must advocate for our Deaf/HoH children and even late deafened adults to find a community that they can thrive into their identities. Being a Deaf/HoH person is very layered because we also have other sorts of identities so it’s important to find a community within the Deaf community- for some it might take time but it’s crucial for the well being, mental health, and identity of the Deaf/HoH person. We can do this! Let’s goo!! :) _ #deaf #reallyrenca #deafawareness #deafhohchildren #deafpeople #deafcomnunity #september #signlanguage #world #belong #asl #advocacy #deafawarenessmonth I wanted to quickly add this related to signing and communication. I really need to emphasize the importance of community for communication. Often times when we talk about the need of having Deaf/HoH children know sign language as they deserve to know because it’s THEIR language. This applies to late deafened adults as well. As we advocate for them to learn sign language, we cannot forget the importance of community. For any languages in the world, it requires community for language to thrive. Like if I learned sign language and I sign to myself- no that makes no sense. No, signing requires community which means meeting other people who share the same language. That’s how we have signing accents, regional signs, signing slangs, etc. Where do they come from? The community. What does a community look like ? Could be a Deaf club or Deaf school or summer camp or like Deaf women or Latinae Deaf group, etc. Many communities within the Deaf community as it depends on where you feel belonged. My point is when we advocate for Deaf/HoH children and even late deafened adults to learn sign language, we cannot forget they need a community too. When we talk about communication, there must be a community too. Communication and community work together to create connection. Perhaps it can take time to navigate and find a specific Deaf community where the individual feels belonged but it’s important for us to remember when discussing communication, discuss community as well. Both of them combined means CONNECTION. Just throwing that in.
