S1 – Ep 203 – Springfontein – A Town with an Important Railway Junction!

It is always our goal to travel on a gravel road wherever possible and this time was no different. Sometimes things don’t go our way though. The road was flooded and we had to turn back and make use of the N1 highway. We're not too fond of highways, but we had to reach our planned destination of Springfontein. We were still very excited to visit this small town. We were so relieved to turn off the N1 and the first place we stopped at was the Kuilfontein Farmstall. Then it was off into the town. What I never knew was that it was an important railway junction on the line to Johannesburg where the Bloemfontein line converges with the East London and Port Elizabeth lines. We were very surprised to see how big this station was! Directly opposite the station was the beautiful, but forgotten old Springfontein Hotel and another stately building, both which seem to be out of commission.
